Another step in learning about and determining majors and careers is to gather insight and get involved. Here are some ideas on how to Engage in meaningful experiences to continue to shape your major and career roadmap.
Gather insight
- Explore information on sites such as Candid Career, LinkedIn, and Peer Into Your Career blog.
- Conduct career conversations and/or job shadows with professionals to learn more about those careers.
Search for internships, jobs, and volunteer positions
- Create your profile on Handshake, which is the University of Minnesota’s job and internship listing site, to find opportunities and events of interest to you.
- Attend drop-ins or make an appointment for help in navigating Handshake, setting up your profile, or getting answers to questions you may have.

Get Involved!
- Participate in internships or co-ops, research projects, UMD student organizations, community organizations, UMD study abroad, clinical or field-work, tribal or cultural experiences, part-time or summer jobs, military service, and/or volunteering to gain experience and skills.
- Meet with a Career Counselor to discuss options that would fit your interests and goals.

- Use these events to explore opportunities, practice talking to employers & representatives, and get career advice.
