Doing an internship for credit is a great way to connect your classroom learning to the world of work and to test out your potential future career. To do your internship for credit, you’ll need to get approval, register for the course, and complete requirements per your department.
Benefits of doing your internship for credit:
- fulfills major requirement or elective
- have support from UMD while interning
- notation on transcript of your internship experience
- meet the requirements of the internship site
- potential for a deeper experiences through assignments and reflections that may be a part of the course
For-Credit Options by College
College of Arts, Humanities, & Social Sciences (CAHSS)
For each CAHSS major, there is an Internship Course you can enroll in and a faculty internship coordinator you can connect with.
Scholarships are available for unpaid and underpaid internships for CAHSS majors.
College of Education & Human Service Professions (CEHSP)
In CEHSP, there are variety of experiences (some required) that students can pursue for credit, including:
- Internships
- Research
- Field experiences
- Student teaching
- Practicum
Check with your department about which experiences are required and which can be done as electives for credit.
Labovitz School of Business & Economics (LSBE)
LSBE students can do internships for credit ranging from zero to six credits.
Swenson College of Science & Engineering (SCSE)
Students in SCSE with internships and co-ops can pursue:
- Zero-credit internship
- For-credit internship
- For-credit co-op
